Abstract

1392555 Non-inflammable polyamide-imide fibres RHONE-POULENC TEXTILE 10 Aug 1972 [12 Aug 1971] 37437/72 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Non-inflammable yarns and fibres are based on aromatic polyamide-imides, contain 8 to 35 wt. per cent of active carbon, and have an Iodine No. of 100 to 500 and a specific surface area of 90 to 300 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. The polyamide-imide may be derived from a tricarboxylic acid anhydride, e.g. trimellitic, or a mixture thereof with a dicarboxylic acid, e.g. iso- or terephthalic, and a diisocyanate, e.g. toluylene diisocyanate or diisocyanato-diphenyl -methane, -propane or -ether. The active carbon preferably has an Iodine No. above 1000 and a specific surface area above 1000 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. Spinning.-The yarns and fibres may be obtained by wet spining a solution of the polymer, e.g. in N-methyl pyrrolidone, containing 8 to 35% carbon black (by wt. of polymer plus carbon) into a coagulate bath of water plus solvent and stretching, washing, drying and optionally drying the filaments. Such solution may be obtained by first homogenizing by grinding a master bath of a solution of polymer containing a higher percentage of carbon and diluting this with a carbon-free solution immediately before spinning. They may be used for protective clotting and for cigarette or anti-pollution filters. [GB1392555A]
