Abstract

1390430 Biaxially stretched films HORSENS PLASTIC AS (HORSENS PLASTICVAREFABRIK AS) 27 July 1972 [21 Aug 1971] 35196/72 Heading B5B Biaxially stretched films, which may be heatshrinkable are made from a tube of plastics film supplied by an extruder 1, a gaseous pressure medium being introduced into the interior of the tube in the first stage, e.g. through tube 6, and the inflated tube being then compressed locally by means of two sets of squeezing rollers 4 and 5 provided between the extruder nozzle 2 and the take-up roller 11 and running at different peripheral speeds, so that there are formed an intermediate bubble 10 and two outer bubbles 7 and 9, the set of squeezing rollers 5 remote from the annular nozzle being passed towardx the squeezing roller set 4 closer to the said nozzle or conversely, directly after the three bubbles have been produced, so that the gas pressure in the intermediate bubble increases and the bubble is distended in the transverse direction. As shown, the squeezing roller sets are arranged one above the other, and preferably the upper set of squeezing rollers is passed such a distance downwards that the pressure in the intermediate bubble is brought up to 14 p.s.i. (1À5 kilo pond/cm.<SP>2</SP>). An alternative apparatus (Fig. 6, not shown), is adapted for horizontal extrusion. Where polyolefin film is used the upper set of squeezing rollers is passed such a distance downwards that the ratio of stretching of the film in the transverse direction will be the same as in the longitudinal direction, preferably 5 : 3. The movement of the squeezing rollers may be effected by means of a separate conveyer unit 15 including a platform 16 containing a rectangular opening 17 in which the squeezing roller set is mounted. The unit 15 may be moved along the four screwthreaded rods 18 by the operation of of the chain wheel 27 driven by motor 28, which engages the endless chain 26 which is connected to four chain wheels 25 mounted on the under side of the platform 16. The stresses imparted to the film by stretching may be such that subsequent reheating to about 75‹ C. causes both longitudinal and transverse shrinking. [GB1390430A]
