Abstract

1390611 Boots &c BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 10 March 1972 [11 March 1971] 6564/71 Heading A3B Machines and methods are described and claimed in which shoes are side-lasted using a single gripper and two progressive wipers. In one method, applicable when the shoe has been pulled-over, heel-seat lasted and toelasted (as Fig. 1), one side of the upper U is tensioned about the last L by a gripper 7 whose jaws 169 act just heelward of the joint and the marginal portions are progressively wiped in over the insole I by a conical, helically ribbed wiper 9 which wipes from the heel end as far as gripper jaws 169 and is then withdrawn. A second cylindrical or slightly tapered wiper 11 now wipes from the toe end as far as the jaws 169 which are then removed allowing wiper 11 to continue heelwards and overlap those margins wiped by wiper 9. Shoes which have not been previously heelseat lasted may be side-lasted by this method if the lasting margins at the sides of the heel portions are suitably deflected under the wipers. The shoe is passed to a similar machine to be lasted on the other side, adhesive being dispensed between the insole and the upper before each lasting operation. [GB1390611A]
