Abstract

1367452 Producing a grass-bearing lamina F B MERGER Ltd 8 Sept 1971 [10 Sept 1970] 43457/70 Heading A1E A method of producing a grass bearing lamina for use in turfing comprises laying a sheet of flexible reticulate, material 2 directly on an impermeable surface 1 and distributing a mixture of rooting medium 4 and grass-seeds 5; the sheet 2 being of such a construction as to define spaces 3a between itself and the surface 1 to allow grass roots 7 which have grown through the sheet 2 to pass along the spaces 3a and be directed upwards back through the sheet 2, as 7a. The grass roots therefore intertwine with the sheet 2 to form a tensilely strong unit that can be removed from the surface 1 and be re-laid on an earth surface requiring turfing. The sheet 2 can be any material of net like construction which will provide turning spaces for roots when laid directly on a sheet 1 and preferably comprises two plane layers of strands the lower layer supporting the upper layer off the surface. As shown each layer comprises a set of parallel strands 3 but in alternative forms a further layer of finer filaments is bonded to the upper layer in the form of either closely spaced parallel filaments (Fig. 4, not shown), or a finer gauge net (Fig. 3, not shown). The impervious surface 1 may take any form but is preferably a flexible sheet of P.V.C., polythene, or surface treated paper and can be used as a carrier when transporting the lamina in a roll or to separate stacked layers of lamina.
