Abstract

1359468 Lubricating contacting interior surfaces of a tyre on deflation DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 9 June 1971 [20 June 1970] 30034/70 Heading B7C A pneumatic tyre 1, which, when mounted on the wheel rim 2 for which it is designed and inflated, has an aspect ratio of between 30 and 75% and a tread whose width is greater than the distance between the tyre bead heels, comprises a coating of a lubricating material disposed on at least a part of the interior surface of the tyre to lubricate those parts of the tyre interior surface which contact when the tyre deflates under load, thereby to prevent tyre destruction due to frictionally generated heat and facilitate running of the tyre in the deflated state. The coating may be such as to withstand temperatures of at least 145‹ C. without deterioration of either the coating or its lubricating properties. The coating may be formed by incorporating a liquid, e.g. castor oil, which is insoluble in rubber, in a rubber liner 3 of the tyre, the liquid migrating to the exposed surface of the liner to form the coating thereon, there being a barrier layer 4 impermeable to the liquid between the liner 3 and the tyre carcass. Alternatively the coating may be particles of solid P.T.F.E., or a gel, applied directly to the interior surface of the tyre. The coating may, as shown in Fig. 1, be applied to portions A, D of the interior surface adjacent the beads and to portions B, C adjacent the tread edges, or may alternatively be provided over the whole of the interior surface. The thickness of the coating may be in the range 0À001-0À025 inch. The tyre may be a radial-ply tyre with a breaker assembly, or may be a cross-ply tyre. The wheel rim 2 which the tyre is intended to be used with has means to prevent the tyre from being dislodged from the rim when running deflated, which means may comprise a flat base on the rim, i.e. such that the rim is without a well into which the tyre beads can fall, as shown in Fig. 1, and/or a bead spacer ring or removable studs on the rim. The flat base rim may be divisible to permit tyre mounting and demounting, or may be a rim initially formed with a well which is closed up after the tyre has been mounted on the rim.
