Abstract

1288727 Selective printing COMPUTER MECHANISMS CORP 19 April 1971 [28 May 1970] 26480/71 Heading B6F A print head carriage 18 is driven in the letter spacing direction by a triple ratchet-andpawl mechanism wherein two ratchets or two pawls are reciprocated in opposite phases. As shown, three racks 14-16 are provided, each co-operating with a respective solenoid controlled pawl 21-23 mounted on the carriage. Two of the racks 14, 15 are reciprocated by cams 12, 13 to drive the carriage 18 when a pawl is brought into co-operation with its associated rack. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, 4, not shown) a single ratchet wheel (30) is connected to the print head carriage by a cable (35), and co-operates with three pawls (31-33) two of which (31, 32) are reciprocated. In each embodiment the third ratchet-and-pawl mechanism is a holding pawl which is released for carriage return or back spacing. The carriage is returned to home position by a spring as at 19 tensioned by letter spacing movement. [GB1288727A]
