Abstract

1344004 Moulding multilayer ceramic articles WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 19 April 1971 [19 Feb 1970] 21836/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division C1] In a method of forming a multilayer ceramic body 31 comprising outer layers 27, 29 having a finer grain structure than the inner layer 28, alumina slip is cast from a series of reservoirs 14, 16, 17 on to a moving belt 12, the walls 22, 23, 24 of the reservoirs being adjustable in height from the belt and being formed with doctor blade edges 22a, 23a, 24a so that slip may be deposited as three superimposed layers; the slip dispensed from reservoir 16 to form the inner layer 28 is provided with a grain growth promoter (0À5% manganese oxide, titanium oxide or niobium oxide) and the slip dispensed from reservoirs 14, 17 to form the outer layers is provided with a grain growth inhibitor (0À2- 0À5% yttrium oxide, magnesium oxide or talc). The resulting tape is air dried, fired, and cut into the desired shape. [GB1344004A]
