Abstract
1286709 Bagging articles KEYES FIBRE CO 12 May 1970 [16 June 1969] 22842/70 Heading B8C In an arrangement for bagging articles such as filled egg cartons 12, the uppermost bag of a stack 42 is inflated with air from a shoot 60 and then torn from a bag retainer 58 by the momentum of an article propelled into the bag by a conveyer 14. The retainer 58 comprises a pair of spaced-apart wires or posts which extend through a flap 56 on each bag 46 of a stack supported on a spring actuated platform 48. The shoot 60 is provided with a baffle 64 which divides the air flow into two streams, one 66 for initially opening a bag and one 68 for maintaining the bag open. The articles 12 are fed intermittently to the conveyer either by hand or by a pair of escapement arms 24 pivoted by a solenoid operator 32 so that upstream and downstream end stops 30, 28 may appropriately engage and release the articles. A pair of solenoid operated guides 76 pivot from the closed position shown to guide an article 12 into an inflated bag, each guide being provided with a tip (92, Fig. 4) for assisting the air stream 68 in holding open the bag. After bagging the article is carried on a conveyer 106 to a heat-shrinking tunnel 108. A driven belt 98 urges the articles against the conveyer 14. Switches 38, 40 are associated with the escapement arms 24. A switch 70 detects the presence of an inflated bag when the hinged flap 74 of a box 72 is urged against the switch by the air-flow emerging from an inflated bag. A switch 94 is associated with the guides 76 and maintains the solenoids 32, 84 energized at least until after the article has cleared the guides 76.
