Abstract

1282971 Helical springs AHLE GEB 15 April 1970 [10 July 1969 1 Oct 1969 7 Jan 1970] 18051/70 Heading F2S A frusto-conical coil spring of the "nesting" type is made from wire of circular section, the wire diameter decreasing with the diameter of the convolutions in such a way that a predetermined maximum stress condition occurs simultaneously in all convolutions. This is in contradistinction to known springs of similar form in which material is wasted because part of the spring is fully stressed under a given load and other parts are not. Fig. 7 shows the basic form. In modifications, the wire may increase in diameter from the "small" end of the spring to a point ¥ of a convolution from the "large" end and thereafter decrease (Figs. 11 to 13, not shown) or the spring may be a double cone (i.e. "small" at both ends and "large" in the middle as in Fig. 14, not shown). The springs either have linear or part-linear part-progressive characteristics as shown by curves A and B in Fig. 10, in which P is load and deflection. [GB1282971A]
