Abstract

1,244,898. Sulphur chloride; sulphur di- Chloride. GLANZSTOFF A.G. 12 Dec., 1969 [8 Jan., 1969], No. 60722/69. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C2] Sulphur chloride and sulphur dichloride are obtained in the preparation of trichloromethyl sulphenyl chloride by reaction of carbon disulphide with chlorine in the presence of active charcoal. The charcoal has preferably been treated to remove iron impurities, and desirably has high abrasion resistance, a particle size of 2À5 to 4 mm. and a surface area of 1200 to 1500 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. Reaction temperatures of -5‹ to 100‹ C. are specified. Reaction may be continuous or batchwise over granular charcoal packed in a reaction column containing a cooling coil, the reagents being introduced either in countercurrent or together at the top of the column. The chlorination mixture may be separated by distillation into a low boiling fraction containing sulphur dichloride and carbon tetrachloride, and a high boiling fraction containing trichloromethyl sulphenyl chloride and sulphur chloride, which may be further purified by steam distillation.
