Abstract

1,253,681. Toughening glass. PILKINGTON BROS. Ltd. 21 Feb., 1969 [27 Feb., 1968], No. 9484/68. Heading C1M. A sheet of glass 2, heated to near its softening point in the furnace 3 with heating means 4, is toughened by subjecting it to preliminary cooling prior to a subsequent severe quenching by passing the glass first through blowing frames 7 where it is cooled by gases issuing from nozzles 8 at a controlled rate so that the surface temperature and centre-to-surface temperature difference are such that deformation and fracture does not occur in the subsequent quenching when the glass is lowered into the quenching bath 11 filled with an oil or molten alloy which produces a high rate of heat transfer from the glass. Suitable apparatus is described in more detail with reference to Figs. 2-5 (not shown), including an installation incorporating a station between the furnace and the blowing frame at which plane glass sheet is bent before treatment (Fig. 5). Several numerical examples are given which relate to treating sheets of glass of various thicknesses, chiefly soda-lime-silicate glasses. The process may also be used on many other articles.
