Abstract
1,253,904. Bond brakes; varying braking force. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. 12 Aug., 1969 [21 April, 1969], No. 40331/69. Heading F2E. A self-compensating brake assembly for continually applying a varying braking force to a rotating shaft 20 in response to variation in the weight thereof (e.g. as a roll of material is grandually unwound therefrom) comprises a stationary U-shaped carrier plate 35 on which is resiliently mounted a bearing member 24 slidable relative to the carrier plate 35, a longitudinal U-sectioned pivot arm 45 one end of which is connected to the stationary carrier plate 35 by a pin 17 and a toggle member 47 and the other end of which is connected to the bearing member 24 by a pin 16 and a rider plate 40, and an endless brake band 50 having a brake lining 56 adapted to engage a substantial portion of the periphery of a brake drum 30 on the shaft 20, the brake band 50 being supported on a pin 18 between pins 16 and 17 on the pivot arm 45. When a weight such as a roll of material is fitted on the shaft 20 the shaft 20 will move vertically down as seen in Fig. 1 and with it will move the brake drum 30, the bearing member 24, the rider plate 40 and also the other end of the pivot arm 45 as the pivot arm 45 pivots about the stationary pin 17 at the one end; the pin 18 and hence the brake band 50 moves a smaller distance down than the drum 30 and thereby the band 50 is tightened on the drum 30 to increase the braking force applied. As the material is wound off the shaft 20 moves upwards and the drum 30 moves up a greater distance than the brake band 50 to decrease the braking force. The length of toggle member 47 is adjustable to provide selective positioning of said one end of the pivot arm 45. The brake band 50 is tear-shaped with a metal strap 52 and a pair of support arms 54, and the lining 56 may be of leather or asbestos.
