Abstract

1,242,597. Proteolytic enzyme-containing detergent composition. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. 26 Nov., 1968 [29 Nov., 1967; 27 Aug.. 1968], No. 66044/68. Heading C5D. A granular proteolytic enzyme-containing detergent composition comprises, by weight: (1) from 60 to 98% of a mixture of an organic detergent and an alkaline builder salt in a weight ratio of alkaline builder salt to organic detergent of 30:1-1:4; (2) from 0À001 to 2% of a proteolytic enzyme having enzymatic activity in the pH range 5- 12 and the temperature range 50-200‹ F.; and (3) a proteolytic enzyme-stabilizing amount of a partially hydrolysed and partially solubilized collagen having an average molecular weight of at least 5000. Specific examples of proteolytic enzymes suitable for use in the present invention are pepsin, trypsin, chymotrypsin, collagenase, keratinase, elastase, the subtilisins, papain, ficin, bromelin, carboxy peptidase, amino peptidase, aspergillopeptidase A and B and those proteolytic enzymes isolated from streptomyces species, e.g. Streptomyces griseus. The proteases may be utilized in the pure form or as powdered commercial enzyme compositions containing these enzymes in an amount 2-80% by weight, the balance being sodium or calcium sulphate. The partially hydrolysed and partially solubilized collagen preferably has an average molecular weight of 5000-250,000 and is suitably gelatin. Generally the collagen is used in a weight ratio of collagen to pure protease in the weight ratio 100:1-1:10, preferably 20:1-1:1. The organic detergents suitable for use in the composition include any of the conventional materials used in detergent compositions, viz. soap, anionic detergents, nonionic detergents, zwitterionic detergents, and ampholytic detergents. The alkaline builder salt may be a conventional inorganic or organic builder salt, e.g. alkali metal carbonates, phosphates and silicates, polyphosphonates, polyacetates and polycarboxylatcs. Preferred organic detergents include sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate, sodium alkyl sulphonate and mixtures thereof in which the alkyl groups contain 10-18 carbon atoms. The specific examples employ sodium tetrapropylene benzene sulphonate as detergent and a mixture of sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium silicate as the alkaline builder. The composition may also contain perfumes, anti-tarnishing agents, inert salts such as sodium sulphate, bacteriostatic agents, dyes, fluorescers, sodium perborate, dihydrogen disodium pyrophosphate, sodium bisulphate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium carboxymethylcellulose. In the preparation of the composition the enzyme and collagenderived protein is preferably mixed with water into a slurry or solution and subsequently sprayed on to one or more of the granular components comprising the detergent composition to provide enzyme-containing granules.
