Abstract

[Also in Divisions C3 and D1] A textile material is bonded to a non- elastomeric plastics polymer by heating in the presence of ingredients which react to form an aldehyde condensation resin. Said ingredients may comprise (i) an aromatic hydroxy compound, e.g. resorcinol, 1,3-dihydroxynaphthalene, or melamine, urea or a generator thereof; and (ii) a compound which generates CH 2 groups of CH 2 O on heating, e.g. hexamethylene tetramine, hexamethoxymethyl melamine, lauryloxymethyl, ethyloxymethyl and cetyloxymethyl pyridinium chlorides, formaldehyde polymers and novolac resins. Component (i) and (ii) may each be present in amount 0À1-10 parts per 100 parts polymer and may be mixed with silica. The bonding may be achieved either (a) by mixing the polymer and reactive ingredients, and applying to the textile; or (b) coating the textile with the reactive ingredients before contacting with the polymer. The textile may comprise a sheet, a woven fabric, or fibres, filaments or cords. In examples, textile cords are bonded at right angles to the length of a slab of polymeric material by heating at 140- 180‹ C. The polymer composition can include a curing agent for subsequent curing. Specified textile materials are polyester, polyamide, polypropylene, rayon and cotton; polyester textiles may be pretreated by glow-discharge or ultraviolet radiation. Specified polymers are polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, copoly (vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate), copoly (ethylene/vinyl acetate), copoly (ethylene/ethyl acrylate), polyethylene and copoly (ethylene/sodium methacrylate).
