Abstract

[Also in Division C3] A pressure-sensitive adhesive which may be applied 'to a substrate such as paper or cloth fabric or a thin plastic sheet is prepared by reacting a polyol and a polyisocyanate to form a reactive prepolymer containing OH or NCO groups, and reacting the prepolymer with further polyisocyanate or polyol, depending on the reactive groups in the prepolymer, to form a cross-linked product having each chain length (defined in the Specification) of at least 130 chain atoms, one of the reactants in at least one stage of the reaction being trifunctional. The total amounts of polyol and polyisocyanate are suitably stoichiometric amounts. An accelerator and/or an antioxidant may be added to the reaction mixture. In Examples (1) excess of dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate was reacted with a polypropylene ether diol to form a prepolymer which was reacted with a triol of M.W. 6000 or 5000, (2) a polyether extended diisocyanate was reacted with a triol to form a prepolymer containing 3 NCO groups, the prepolymer then being reacted with further triol and (3) a chain extended polyol prepared by reacting excess of a diol of M.W. 2000 with a diisocyanate was reacted with a chain-extnded polyisocyanate prepared by reacting excess of a polyether extended prepolymer diisocyanate with a triol.
