Abstract
The present invention relates to a Hand control system for use with a driving simulation device comprising a base support assembly and a lever arm which is adapted to incorporate a mechanism which once moved in one direction simulates braking control of a vehicle, once the lever is moved in the opposing direction allowing for the simulation of the acceleration control of a vehicle.
Description
A Hand control system for use with a driving game or driving simulation device.
Field of the Invention The present Invention relates to an electronic controller for vehicle simulations and driving video games. In particular the invention relates to a new type of hand control to be used as a method of simulated vehicle control.
Background to the Invention Driving video games are very popular with people who enjoy the excitement of driving vehicles including but not limited to, heavy goods vehicles and racing cars. Driving video games which have been produced for the general public have mostly been controlled using hand held controllers. Whereas video games produced for arcade use, and driving simulators used for vehicle driver training and assessment use replicated vehicle inputs such as steering wheel controls, pedal controls, gear controls and any other relevant vehicle input devices.
Currently the software technology used in modern vehicle simulators and driving video games provide the user with very accurate feedback representations of the real world application and are readily available to the average consumer. Likewise hardware technology used to replicate vehicle input for the use of vehicle simulation which utilises the aforementioned software technology has become more affordable and readily available to the consumer.
Typically the aforementioned modern driving simulators and driving video games are controlled using steering wheel and pedal inputs to accurately replicate vehicle input controls to drive a simulated vehicle.
However people who do not have the full use or any use of their legs are not in the position to use the readily available foot pedals provided by current technology providers and are not in a position to enjoy the immersive experience of Driving video games or benefit from training and driver assessment when used in a driving simulator.
Therefore there is a need for driving video game controls and driving simulator controls which can replicate vehicle input controls while being operated with the hands or arms.
Statement of Invention Accordingly there is a Hand control comprising: a base support assembly comprising a load cell, a hall effect potentiometer and a fulcrum said fulcrum is attached to a lever arm comprising a handle grip. Said lever arm is adapted to incorporate a mechanism which once moved in one direction applies pressure to the load cell, once the lever is moved in the opposing direction a magnet passes over the aforementioned Hall effect potentiometer which measures the angular position of the lever allowing for input to be measured.
In one embodiment of the invention both the aforementioned Load cell and potentiometer are wired to a control box comprising a circuit board which allows for communication between the hand control and a computer used to run the Driving video game.
In one embodiment of the invention both the aforementioned Load cell and potentiometer are wired to a control box comprising a circuit board which allows for communication between the hand control and a games console used to run the Driving video game.
In one embodiment of the invention both the aforementioned Load cell and potentiometer are wired to a control box comprising a circuit board which allows for communication between the hand control and a computing unit of a simulator assembly.
The advantages of the invention are that the base support assembly is designed to allow a strong construction which is easy to install and use with a Driving video game input assembly or incorporated into a driver training simulator assembly.
Brief description of the drawings The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description of an embodiment thereof, given by way of an example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows an isometric view of the Hand control according to the invention; Figure 2a-2c illustrates a number of views of the Hand control according to the invention.
Figure 3 Illustrates an alternative embodiment of the Hand Control according to the invention.
Detailed description Referring now to the drawings and initially to Figures 1 & Figures 2, a,b &c, there is illustrated a Hand control comprising: a base support assembly (1) comprising a load cell (6) and a fulcrum (5) said fulcrum is attached to a lever arm (2) comprising a handle grip (3). Said lever arm is adapted to incorporate a mechanism comprising an Elastomer (7) which applies pressure to the load cell once the lever is moved in one direction. Said lever arm also incorporates a magnet mounted on the lever arm (2) which once moved in the opposite to the aforementioned direction measures the angular position of the lever via a hall effect sensor allowing for input to be measured. The aforementioned mechanism also incorporates a spring (8) which allows for the self centering of the lever so that the user does not require the need to manually return the lever arm (2) to its resting position.
Figure 3 illustrates an alternative embodiment of the invention where the alternative handle grip (4) is used in lieu of the Handle Grip (3).
