Abstract

A device for use in fitting a sill to an opening in a cavity wall. The device comprises an elongated baseplate having opposite longitudinal front and rear edges and a width sufficient to span two leaves of a cavity wall. A transverse wall is located at each end of the base plate, and spaced longitudinal walls extend along the rear of the baseplate between the transverse end walls. The baseplate and walls define an open-fronted tray at the front of the baseplate for receiving a sill and a container extends substantially along the length of the baseplate behind the tray for receiving a concrete filling. At least the portions of the baseplate and walls defining the tray are made of a water-impermeable material.

Description

OPEFJ TO PUBLIC INSPECTION I , uMjERTSECTION 28 Also RUL£ I Ko .....of This invention relates to a device for use in fitting a sill to an opening in a cavity wail.
Conventionally, a sill is fitted to a door or window opening in a cavity wall by wrapping the bottom, rear and ends of the sifl in a water-impermeable membrane (damp proof course) and placing the sill on the front leaf of the cavity wall. Because the sill does not usually extend over the rear leaf, a vertical board or other shuttering has to be fixed to the inside surface of the cavity wall and the gap between the rear ofthe sill and the shuttering back-filied with concrete.
Such operations are time-consuming and require a reasonable degree of expertise. eot It is an object of the invention to provide a device which will facilitate the fitting of sills to openings in cavity walls.
According to the present invention there is provided a device for use in fitting a siil to an opening in a cavity wail, the device comprising an elongated baseplate having opposite longitudinal front and rear edges and a width sufficient to span two leaves of a cavity wall, a pair of transverse walls one at each end of the base plate respectively, and a pair of spaced longitudinal walls extending along the rear of the baseplate between the transverse end walls, the baseplate and walls defining an openfronted tray at the front of the baseplate for receiving a sill and a container, which preferably extends substantialiy along the length of the baseplate, behind the tray for receiving a concrete filling, wherein, preferably, at least the portions of the baseplate and walls defining the tray are made of a water-impermeable materiai.
Preferably, the underside ofthe baseplate has at least one formation for engaging in the gap between leaves of a cavity wall to locate the device in position on the leaves.
The device may have a layer of insulating material on the inside surface of the longitudinal wall 30 separating the tray from the container.
The device may also have a mesh layer against the outside surface of the rearmost longitudinal wall.
The invention also provides a cavity wall sill structure comprising a device as claimed in any 35 preceding claim with its baseplate spanning two leaves of a cavity wall, a sill located on the openfronted tray, and concrete filling in the container.
In the present specification expressions of orientation and relative position such as “front”, rear”, “horizontal, vertical”, etc,, are used for convenience and refer to the orientation ofthe device in normal use. Also, expressions such as “rectangular”, “normal to”, “parallel to”, etc., are not intended to be interpreted with mathematical precision.
IE 11 0 5 11 An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device according to the embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a cross-section through the device of Figure 1.
Figure 3 are various views of the device of Figure 1, as noted on the figure.
Figure 4 is a schematic perspective view of the device in use, the front concrete sill being shown in dashed outline and the rear concrete filling omitted.
Figure 5 is a cross section through the in-use device of Figure 4 including the concrete sill and concrete filling.
Referring to the drawings, a device for use in fitting a sill to an opening in a cavity wall comprises a horizontal elongated rectangular baseplate 10 having opposite parallel longitudinal front and rear edges 12 and 14 respectively. The baseplate 10 has a width sufficient to span two leaves 16 and 18 of a cavity wall (Figures 4 and 5). The device further includes a pair of parallel vertical end walls 20 and 22 disposed normal to the edges 12 and 14, one wali at each end ofthe base plate respectively, and a pair of parallel vertical longitudinal walls 24 and 26 extending along the rear of the baseplate 10 between the transverse end walls. The wall 26 extends along the rear edge 14 ofthe baseplate 10 and the wall 24 is spaced in front of the wall 26.
The baseplate 10 and the walls 20-26 thus define an open-fronted substantially flat tray 28 at the front of the baseplate 10, i.e. in front of the wall 24, shaped and dimensioned to receive a concrete sill 40 (Figures 4 and 5), and an open-topped container 30 extending substantially along the length of the baseplate behind the tray 28, i.e. between the walls 24 and 26, for receiving a concrete filling 42 (Figure 5). The underside of the baseplate 10 has a locating means 32 in the form of at least one downwardly projecting formation for engaging in the gap 34 (Figures 4 and 5) between the leaves 16,18 ofthe cavity wall to properly position the device in position on the leaves. As shown the locating means 32 is a single rib extending along the full length of the baseplate 10, but there may be a number of projections formed at intervals along the length of the baseplate. The container 30 may have one or more transverse strengthening walls 35 intermediate the end walls 20, 22 to prevent sagging ofthe walls 24, 26 when the container 30 is filled with concrete.
In the illustrated embodiment, the transverse walls 20, 22 extend all of the way along the ends of the baseplate to provide end walls not only for the container 30 but also for the tray 28. Alternatively, one or both of the transverse walls 20, 22 may extend only partly along the respective end of the baseplate 10, preferably to at least provide a respective end wall for the container, but optionally IE 1 1 0 5 11 providing no respective end wall for the tray 28, or a respective end wall for the tray 28 that extends only partly along the respective end of the tray.
In the preferred embodiment, the container 30 extends substantially the whole way along the length of the baseplate 10, but it may alternatively extend only part of the way along the length of the baseplate 10.
The device as so far described, i.e. consisting of the baseplate 10 and walls 20-26, is preferably made of a rigid or semi-rigid water-impermeable material, for example 3mm thick PVC or other plastics material. The device may be made from plastics sheet material by folding and plastics welding. The device may be manufactured in different depths and lengths and widths to suit different standard sill sizes. In the device shown the baseplate is 1500mm x 300mm; the locating means is 25mm deep, 300mm wide in the width direction of the baseplate 10 and centrally located between the edges 12 and 14; and the walls 20-26 are 100mm or 150mm high.
The device may also include a layer of thermal insulating material 36 oh the inside surface of the wall 24 separating the tray 28 from the container 30, e.g., 25mm thick HD grade polystyrene insulation board. Also, a mesh layer 38, made, for example, of expanded metal, may be fixed against the outside surface of the rearmost longitudinal wall 26 to provide a key for plaster on the inside surface of the cavity wall. The mesh layer 28 preferably extends below the baseplate 10 and laterally beyond the end walls 20 and 22.
In use, Figures 4 and 5, the baseplate 10 is laid across the leaves 16,18 of the cavity wall with the rib 32 engaging in the gap 34. A pre-cast concrete sill 40 is then placed on the tray 28 and concrete 42 poured into the container 30.
Although in the preceding embodiment the entire device consisting of the baseplate 10 and walls 2026 is made of a water impermeable material, e.g. PVC, optionally only those parts of the baseplate 10 and walls 20-24 which define the base, rear wall and sidewalls of the open-fronted tray 28 are made of water-impermeable material. However, for low cost and ease of manufacture it is advantageous to make the entire device of the same material.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment described herein which may be modified or varied without departing from the scope of the invention.
