Description

"A jig and a method for locating a pair of elongated and a method for locating a pair of elongated r* COPY members spaced apart relative to each other" The present invention relates to a jig and method for locating a pair of elongated members spaced apart relative to each other, and in particular, though not limited to a jig and method for locating roof laths spaced apart from each other on a roof.
Laths are laid transversely of roof rafters at spaced apart locations for supporting roof tiles, slates or the like. It is essential that the roof laths should be parallel to each other, and furthermore, should run perpendicularly to the rafters. Otherwise, the roof tiles or slates will appear to be lying in rows which are angled relative to each other or angled relative to the rafters. Furthermore, it is essential that each lath should be equally spaced apart from its next adjacent lath. Otherwise, the amount of each slate or roof tile exposed in the various rows will vary. Having rows of roof tiles angled relative to each other or angled relative to the rafters, and also having excessive areas of roof tiles exposed is unacceptable. Apart from being aesthetically undesirable, badly located tiles can lead to serious problems, such as a leaking roof and tiles or slates being blown from a roof.
Various methods and devices are used for locating roof laths of a roof, however, no satisfactory device or method has been found.
There is therefore a need for a jig and method for locating roof laths spaced apart from each other on rafters of a roof. The advantages of the invention are many. The jig according to the invention allows IE 10 0 462 laths to be relatively quickly and easily, and in particular accurately positioned on rafters of a roof without the necessity of tediously measuring out the locations at which the laths are to be located on the rafters. The jig is a particularly simple and inexpensive tool and can be readily easily produced, Additionally, the spacing between the engagement faces of the first and second members can be readily easily and accurately set by viewing the engagement face ofthe first engagement member through the adjustment slot. Once the first engagement member of the jig has been accurately positioned on the support member relative to the second engagement member, the first engagement member can be readily, easily and quickly secured to the support member. The provision of two graduated scales, one on each side of the adjustment slot, has the added advantage that the jig according to the invention is suitable for use with both metric units and imperial units.
The invention wili be more clearly understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, which is given by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a jig according to the invention, Fig. 2 is an exploded perspective view of the jig of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the jig of Fig. 1 in use.
Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated a jig according to the invention, indicated generally by the reference numeral 1, for locating a pair of elongated IE 1 Ο Ο 4 6 2 members spaced apart relative to each other. In this embodiment of the invention the jig 1 is particularly suitable for locating laths 2 in spaced apart relationship parallel to each other on rafters 3 of a roof, see Fig. 3.
The jig 1 comprises an elongated support member 4 of aiuminium. A pair of engagement members, namely, a first engagement member 5 and a second engagement member 6 are mounted on the support member 4 for engaging and locating the laths 2 relative to each other. The first and second engagement members 5 and 6 comprise first and second right angle brackets 7 and 8, respectively, of aluminium. The second bracket 8 is rigidiy mounted on the support member 4 by rivets 9. One leg, namely, a mounting leg 10 of the second bracket 8 is rigidly secured to the support member 4 by the rivets 9. The other leg, namely, an engagement leg 11 of the second bracket 8 defines an engagement face 12 for engaging one of the laths 2 as will be described below. The engagement face 12 defined by the engagement leg 11 extends outwardly and perpendicularly of the support member 4 and transversely of the support member 4.
The engagement member 5 is moveably mounted on the support member 4 and is slideable longitudinally along the support member 4. The first bracket 7 of the first engagement member 5 comprises a mounting ieg 13 which slideably engages the support member 4 and an engagement leg 14 which defines an engagement face 15 for engaging and locating another one of the laths 2 spaced apart from the lath 2 engaged by the engagement face 12 of the second engagement member 6. The engagement face 15 extends perpendicularly outwardly of the support member 4 J 25 and transversely thereof. |g 10 0462 A guide means comprising a pair of spaced apart guide members 16 formed on the mounting leg 13 of the first bracket 7 of the first engagement member 5 slideably engage opposite side edges 17 of the support member 4 for retaining the engagement face 15 of the first engagement member 5 extending transversely of the support member 4, and for guiding the first engagement member 5 longitudinally along the support member 4 with the engagement face 15 of the first engagement member 5 moving with rectilinear motion relative to the engagement face 12 of the second engagement member 6.
A securing means comprising a screw 18 rigidly mounted on and extending from the mounting leg 13 of the first bracket 7 slideably engages an elongated adjustment slot 19 extending longitudinally in the support member 4. A washer 20 and a wing nut 21 on the screw 18 secure the first bracket 7 in a desired location relative to the support member 4.
Graduated scales 24 and 25 are provided on the support member 4 along respective opposite sides of the adjustment slot 19. The abutment face 15 of the first engagement member 5 is selectively alignable with graduations 26 and 27 of the graduated scales 24 and 25 for indicating the distance between the engagement face 15 of the first engagement member 5 and the engagement face 12 of the second engagement member 6, so that the spacing between the engagement faces 15 and 12 can be read off from the graduated scales 24 and 25, depending on the respective graduations 26 and 27 with which the engagement face 15 of the first engagement member 5 is aligned. The graduated scale 24 is a metric scale in IE 100 462 IO metric units, while the graduated scale 25 is an Imperial scale in imperial units.
In use, to set the jig 1 for locating a pair of laths 2 relative to each other, the engagement face 15 of the first engagement member 5 is aligned with the appropriate graduation 26 or 27 on the appropriate one of the scales 24 and 25 which corresponds to the desired spacing between the laths 2. This is carried out by viewing the engagement face 15 of the first engagement member 5 through the adjustment slot 19, and aligning the engagement face 15 with the appropriate one of the graduations 26 and 27. The wing nut 21 is tightened on the screws 18 for securing the first engagement member 5 with the engagement faces 15 and 12 at the desired spacing.
Referring now to Fig. 3, the method according to the invention for locating laths 2 will now be described. In Fig. 3 a portion of a roof 28 under construction is illustrated.
The roof 28 comprises the rafters 3, portions of which are illustrated. Portions of three laths 2 for mounting roof tiles, slates or the like are also illustrated. As mentioned above, it is essential that the laths 2 should be parallel to each other and that the laths 2 should be equi-spaced apart relative to each other. Further, it is important that the laths 2 should run perpendicularly to the rafters 3.
Initially the length of a rafter 3 is measured from the eve run to the roof ridge. This distance is then divided by the number of laths 2 to be secured to the rafters to give the spacing between the laths 2. The first engagement member 5 is set on the support member 4 of the jig 1 with its engagement face 15 aligned with the appropriate graduation on the appropriate one of the scales 24 or 25 as already IE 1 Ο Ο 4 6 2 described so that the engagement faces 15 and 12 of the first and second engagement members 5 and 6 are at the appropriate spacing. The wing nut 21 is secured on the screw 18 thereby securing the first engagement member 5 in position on the support member 4.
The first of the laths 2 adjacent the eve run is secured to the rafters so that the lath 2 is perpendicular to the rafters. The jig 1 is then used to locate the next adjacent lath 2 relative to the first lath 2, and so on. The engagement face 12 of the second engagement member 6 is engaged with a side edge 29a of the last to be secured of the secured laths 2, which is indicated by the reference numeral 2a in Fig. 3, at one end of the lath 2a, with the first engagement member 5 located adjacent the location at which the next of the laths 2 to be secured is to be located. The engagement face 15 of the first engagement member 5 defines the position for the next lath 2b which is located on the rafters 3 with the side edge 29b thereof engaging the engagement face 15. The end of the rafter 2b is secured to the adjacent rafter 3.
The jig 1 is then removed and placed at the other end of the secured lath 2a with the engagement face 12 of the second engagement member 6 in engagement with the side edge 29a of the secured lath 2a with the engagement face 15 of the first engagement member 5 defining the location for the lath 2b. The side edge 29b of the corresponding end of the lath 2b is then brought into engagement with the engagement face 15 of the first engagement member 5 and the lath 2b is secured to the adjacent rafter 3.
The lath 2b is secured to the remaining rafters 3 which are intermediate the two IE 1 0 0 462 rafters 3 to which the ends of the lath 2b have been secured. The jig 1 may be used to check the spacing between the laths 2a and 2b intermediate the ends of the laths 2. The next adjacent lath to the lath 2b is then secured to the rafters 3 using the jig 1 in similar fashion.
While the jig has been described as being of aluminium material, the jig may be of any other suitable material. Further, while the engagement members have been described as being angle brackets, any other suitable engagement members may be used. Indeed, It is envisaged in certain cases that the jig may be of a moulding or io casting, in which case the second engagement member may be integrally formed with the support member. Furthermore, it will of course be appreciated that other suitable securing means besides a screw and a wing nut may be provided. Indeed, in certain cases, it is envisaged that a toggle mechanism or the like may be provided. It will of course be appreciated that the scale may be provided in any other suitable position on the support member and while the device has been described as comprising an imperial and metric scale, only one scale need be provided if desired.
While the jig has been described for use in locating laths on rafters of a roof, the jig may be used for locating any other elongated members relative to each other.
Further, while the jig has been described for locating members parallel to each other, it could be used for locating members angled relative to each other, in which case, one setting of the first engagement member on the support member would be used for locating the elongated members at one end relative to each other while a IE 1 0 0462 different setting of the first engagement member would be used for locating the other ends of the elongated members.
