Abstract

A fume burning system for improving the environmental quality of gaseous fluid emanating from, for example, an incinerator comprising a reburn unit (123) which has an inlet opening coupled to the gaseous fluid to be treated and an outlet. At least one burner is coupled to the reburn unit for burning fuel in the reburn unit and a fan (129) provides oxygen containing gas for combustion of fumes within the reburn unit. An excitor (134) is placed within and is surrounded by the reburn unit. Over the majority of the length of the excitor it is out of contact with the walls of the reburn unit. A plurality of nozzles (135) are provided in the excitor and are connected to a longitudinally extending pipe within the excitor. The pipe is connected by way of a passageway extending through the excitor support (133) to receive combustion air from the fan (129). <Figure 8>

Claims (8)

CLAIMS:
1. A fume burning system for improving the environmental quality of a gaseous fluid emanating from the output of a source and containing combustible hydrocarbons comprising a rebum unit with: / (1) an inlet opening, coupled to and in fluid communication with said output; 2. (2) an outlet opening for the egress of the gaseous products of combustion from said rebum unit; 3. (3) burner means, coupled to said reburn unit, for burning a fuel in said rebum unit; and (4) oxygenating means, coupled to said rebum unit, for introducing an oxygencontaining gas into said reburn unit, characterized by: (A) excitor means, placed within, surrounded by, and coupled to said rebum unit, the majority of the length of said excitor means, in passing from said inlet opening to said outlet opening, being out of contact with the wall of said reburn unit, for reducing tire cross-sectional area of said rebum unit on a plane transverse to the path passing from said inlet opening to said outlet opening; and (B) a plurality of nozzle means, coupled to, in fluid communication with, and forming part of said oxygenating means, said nozzle means being connected to and arranged on the surface of said excitor means and being for introducing said oxygen-containing gas into the space between the inner surface of said rebum unit and said excitor means at a nonperpcndicular angle to said path.
2. The fume burning system of Claim 1 further characterized by a main combustion chamber with: IE 000397 -36(a) an inlet for the introduction of solid bulk refuse; and (b) an outlet coupled to said first inlet opening of said rebum unit for the egress of the gaseous products of combustion from said main chamber.
3. The fume burning system of Claim 1 further characterized by the surface of said excitor means facing said interior being composed of a heat and corrosion resistant material.
4. The fume burning system of Claim 1 further characterized by said 10 oxygenating means including a plenum located on the exterior of said rebum unit, and by said oxygenating means passing said oxygen-containing gas through said plenum and then through said nozzles on said excitor means.
5. A method of burning fumes emanating from the output of a source comprising: (1) passing said fumes from said output directly into an inlet opening of a reburn unit; (2) burning a fuel in said rebum unit; and (3) passing the gaseous combustion products out of said rebum unit; characterized by 20 (A) while in said rebum unit, passing said fumes around an excitor placed within, surrounded by, and coupled to said rebum unit with the majority of the length of said excitor, in passing from said inlet opening to an outlet opening through which the gaseous combustion products can egress from said rebum unit, being out of contact with the wall of said rebum unit; and (B) introducing into the space between the inner surface of said rebum unit and -5 said excitor at a nonperpendicular angle to the path of the flow of gas through said space an amount of an oxygen-containing gas into said reburn unit through a first plurality of nozzles connected to and arranged on the surface of said excitor IE 000397
-376. The method of Claim 5 further characterized by: (A) placing bulk refuse through an inlet into a main incinerator chamber; (B) burning said bulk refuse to produce gaseous combustion products; (C) passing the gaseous combustion products out of said main combustion chamber through an outlet and directly into said inlet opening of said rebum unit.
7. The method of Claim 6 further characterized by passing said oxygencontaining gas around the exterior of said reburn unit and then introducing said oxygencontaining gas into said rebum unit through said excitor means.
8. The method of Claim 5 further characterized by passing said oxygencontaining gas around the exterior of said rebum unit and then introducing said oxygencontaining gas into said rebum unit through said excitor means. F. R. KELLY & CO.,
