Abstract
Ammonium and nitrite ion concns. can be reduced in drinking waters, when these are atomised in a deaerator and subjected to a countercurrent of reactive gases, namely depending on local conditions to hydrogen or oxygen. Hydrogen decomposes ammonium ions, provided their anion contain oxygen, and results in the formation of nitrogen and water. The result of oxygen used, either in pure state, or as in air, is the oxidation to nitrates of both ammonium and nitrite ions. When as a result nitrate ion concns. exceed 40 mg/l permitted max. these are treated by procedure No. 352/16-02/1980/OTH.
