Abstract

The air cylinder (12) and a fuel management cylinder (14) are interconnected by a combustion chamber (50) and have pistons, reciprocating in phase. Liquid or gaseous fuel is injected from an injector (36) into the cylinder where it mixes with air during the compression stroke to form a very rich mixture which cannot be spontaneously ignited by the high compression pressures used in the engine. - Air from the cylinder is forced into the combustion chamber during the compression stroke through a port (44) which imparts a vortex motion to the air in the chamber, which air mixes with the rich mixture entering the combustion chamber from the fuel cylinder. Ignition may be by a spark plug, a glow plug, a hot ceramic surface or a catalytic material.(2/24)
