Abstract

Powders and compsns. forming stable gels with reversible water-uptake are prepd. by: a) treating clay minerals contg. more than 15 wt.% water with 0.05-100 wt.% based on the clay minerals of water soluble polymers capable of reacting with the clay, by adding not more than 50% of the polymer material as aq. soln. to the clay before or during the activation of the clay, and the rest of the polymer after the activation process is terminated, or b) by adding to clay minerals in the pre-activated state and contg. more than 45 wt.% water, with intensive stirring 0.05-100 wt.% based on the clay of water soluble polymer capable of reacting with the clay minerals, and opt. drying the resulting mixt. - Useful clay minerals are clays with a three-layer structure and/or swellable chain silicates.
