Abstract

1505233 Kaolinitic clay ENGLISH CLAYS LOVERING POCHIN & CO Ltd 24 Jan 1977 [23 Jan 1976] 02752/76 Heading C1A The rheological and strength properties of a kaolinitic clay are improved by (a) subjecting an aqueous suspension of kaolinitic clay to filtration at 300-1200 p.s.i. to form a filter cake having 15-25 wt. per cent moisture content (b) feeding the cake to a plastic mixer to dissipate in the clay at least 80KJ of energy per Kg. of dry clay. If necessary, the mechanically worked filter cake is thermally dried to give a product usually having not more than 15 wt. per cent moisture. The aqueous suspension in step (a) may contain a flocculant such as CaCl 2 or Al sulphate or a water soluble high molecular weight polymer selected from polyacrylamide, partially hydrolysed polyacrylamide and high molecular weight polyacrylates.
