Abstract
In order to control the operation and ensure the rational and economic running of live mud waste water purification plants the decomposition activity of live mud is measured electro-chemically with dissolved oxygen and glucose electrodes, in continuously aerated live mud samples. After stabilization of the electrode signals 5-500 mg. per litre glucose soln. is added to the live mud sample, the glucose electrode is calibrated, and after a set time the remaining glucose concn. of the live mud sample is measured, making sure that signals from the glucose electrode are taken at constant oxygen concn. - The measurements are carried out in a reactor suitable to operate with live mud and fitted with an aerating pipe, a dissolved oxygen electrode and a glucose electrode. The signal output of the electrodes is connected through polarizing and amplifying units to a high input resistance mV-meter operating via an output unit with a signal processor. The feeding of live mud samples and of glucose, the aerating of the sample, the automatic measurement of glucose and dissolved oxygen and of remaining glucose are governed by a computer.
