Abstract
Iron-oxide of the purity required for application in information technology can be obtd. from the iron-sulphate resulting as by-prod. in iron pickling operations and the ammonium-carbonate available from the carbon-dioxide by-prod. of the Haber-Bosch ammonia synthesis. - The metallic impurities of the by-prod. iron-sulphate can be eliminated as precipitates, the colloidal silicic-acid concn. can be reduced by adding iron-sulphate made from metallic iron from a steel furnace and sulphuric-acid. Iron-sulphate is reacted with ammonium-carbonate to give iron-carbonate which is transformed into iron-oxide by heating. The ammonium-sulphate produced in the reaction is a useful by-prod..
