Abstract
A mould material (II) constituting a mould half for use in the prodn of contact lenses comprises: (i) a thermoplastic polymer comprising polystyrene or polypropylene; and (ii) 0.05-5 wt% internal additive impregnated into the thermoplastic material. The internal additive is a polyethylene or polypropylene wax of mol wt 5,000-200,000, an amide wax of formula (I) of mol wt 200-2,000, silicone of mol. wt 2,000-100,000, montan wax, oxidised wax, fatty acid of mol wt 200-2,000 and/or a complex ester. Also claimed are: (1) a mould material (III) constituting a mould half for use in the prodn of contact lenses comprising polystyrene and a wetting agent admixed with it; (2) mould halves for use in the prodn of contact lenses each comprising the mould materials (II) or (III) above respectively; (3) mould assemblies each comprising the mould halves of (2) respectively and a second mould half; and (4) use of the mould material or the mould halves or the mould assemblies in a process for forming a contact lens from a polymerisable compsn..
