Abstract
Canned pet food product comprises: (a) a base layer containing food pieces in a gravy and having a conical recess formed into its upper surface, which comprises 20-40 wt.% of the layer and (b) an upper layer of solid foodstuff for supporting (a) upon inversion and filling the recess, so that the foodstuff comprises 20-80 wt.% of the product. The recess into the base layer extending entirely through the base layer is preferably frusto-conical in shape. The solid food pieces in the base layer comprise a formulated emulsion product have the striated appearance of natural meat in flake form. The gravy comprises water and 2-8 wt.% heat sensitive starch which undergoes a reduction in its viscosity increasing properties during heating. Solid foodstuff comprises gelled meat loaf, cooked rice, cooked noodles and/or aspic.
