Description

The subject invention relates to multi-layer plastic strips or plates (hereinafter referred to as plastic strips for short) with a transparent covering layer, the process for their production as well as their application.

By multi-layered plastic strips or plates in the sense of this invention, we mean such surface structures, which consist of several layers placed over each other.

Takve višeslojne trake mogu biti primjerice slijedećeg sastava: Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-based multi-layer plastic tapes, with a transparent cover layer as a useful layer, have been used for decades as floor coverings. Such multi-layer tapes can be, for example, of the following composition:

*proziran pokrivni sloj *transparent cover layer

(debljine 0,2 do 0,8 mm) (thickness 0.2 to 0.8 mm)

*međusloj, prema potrebi obojen i/ili s uzorkom *interlayer, colored and/or patterned as needed

(debljine 0,2 do 0,4 mm) (0.2 to 0.4 mm thick)

*donji sloj, obojen po želji *bottom layer, colored as desired

(debljina 1,0 do 2,5 mm) (thickness 1.0 to 2.5 mm)

*prema potrebi sloj za zaštitu od zvuka npr. iz pjenaste *if necessary, a layer for sound protection, e.g. from foam

plastične mase, pluta ili plutanih smjesa plastic mass, cork or cork mixtures

(debljina 1,5 do 2,0 mm) (thickness 1.5 to 2.0 mm)

To display the pattern, either the back (bottom) side of the cover layer (transparent layer) can be printed in one or more colors and/or the intermediate layer can be printed in one or more colors.

This can be achieved in a cheaper way using the gravure printing process. In addition to these multi-layered (heterogeneous) plastic tapes, so-called homogeneous plastic tapes are also known, that is, single-layered plastic tapes, in which all components are mixed with each other in such a way that they show the same properties (homogeneous) throughout the cross-section of the plastic tapes from the top to the bottom.

In the case of homogeneous plastic strips, the sample can be obtained by applying multi-colored granules. Usually, the agents that connect polymers, pigment(s), fillers and if necessary granulates containing auxiliary materials, are also processed into plastic strips or plates in compressor aggregates, such as calenders, two-lane presses or static presses. Considering the production conditions, with homogeneous plastic strips, only one more or less colored pattern can be achieved in the longitudinal direction, which means that we are very limited in terms of sample selection. At the same time, it is quite expensive to adjust the existing production devices so as to obtain homogeneous plastic strips with variants and pattern changes, if this is even possible within the scope of the production of homogeneous plastic strips. Such pattern and color changes are nevertheless necessary, in order to be able to react to the changing needs of the market.

In contrast to homogeneous plastic tapes with a continuous, longitudinal pattern, multi-layer (heterogeneous) plastic tapes with a transparent cover layer have the advantage that in their production there is complete freedom with regard to the choice of color and pattern, because the pattern can be obtained in several ways by subsequent printing of transparent of the cover layer and/or by printing the uppermost intermediate layer.

The next advantage with regard to homogeneous plastic tapes is that, in the case of multi-layered plastic tapes, only the cover layer and the uppermost intermediate layer must have a constant color, in order to obtain plastic tapes of a constant, unchanging color. All the layers below that can be of different, even changing colors, so it is possible to put production waste plastic strips or even recycling material in that bottom layer.

As we mentioned at the beginning, PVC-based floor coverings, with a transparent top layer as the layer used (the layer you walk on), have been on sale for a long time. In recent years, the removal of PVC or plastic materials containing PVC has become quite problematic, because the chlorine content of PVC during disposal represents a dangerous potential, and when burned, hydrogen chloride is released, which affects the corrosion of the incinerator and is dangerous to health.

PVC-based floor coverings also contain a softener. This softener content also has downsides, because the softener can enter the glue with which the floor covering is glued, thus weakening the adhesion strength. The softener can evaporate, due to which the floor covering becomes a dirt catcher that is difficult to clean, and the softener is a sewage system for the incoming coloring agent, as a result of which color changes occur that can no longer be removed. Volatile softeners are also a problem for the environment.

For the aforementioned reasons, plastic materials that are not harmful to the environment are sought as a substitute for PVC, with which products can be made, for example multi-layer floor coverings, which have similar good properties as those produced on the basis of PVC, but do not have such bad side's.

In the first place, plastics based on olefinic polymers come into consideration, such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), ethylene-propylene copolymer, as well as copolymers of ethylene with other olefinic unsaturated compounds.

Thus, for example, in EP-B1-0 321 760, for the production of homogeneous plastic strips without PVC, the use of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)-copolymer as a polymer binder is proposed.

Also in DE-A1-41 14 085, a PVC-free floor covering is proposed, whereby homogeneous plastic strips containing EVA-copolymer together with polyolefin as a binding agent are produced. These strips can be doubled or tripled.

Furthermore, in DE-C1-41 27 107, a PVC-free multi-layer floor covering is proposed, wherein the EVA-based floor covering is doubled or tripled with a transparent film of low density and/or very low density linear ethylene copolymer.

EVA-copolymers are admittedly relatively cheap and can be applied in such a variety of ways that they can be used in almost all layers of multi-layer plastic tape. Thus, a multi-layered plastic tape can consist of layers of homogeneous polymer composition. This is of great importance, due to the internal production recycling of edge strips, waste, etc. of individual layers.

S druge strane EVA- kopolimeri imaju dosta loših strana. On the other hand, EVA copolymers have a lot of downsides.

According to the list of maximum concentrations in the workplace (from: New Chemicals Act, Handbook of Hazardous Substances, Eberhard Quellmalz, Weka-Verlag, February 1992), vinyl acetate is placed in the carcinogenic group ΙΙΙB. Thus, major problems and risks can arise during the production of plastic strips or panels containing EVA, as well as their application as floor coverings, especially with regard to safety regulations, which are becoming more and more rigorous.

The content of the remaining vinyl acetate monomer is in the range of 0.1 to 0.5 wt. -%. This proportion of vinyl acetate cannot be reduced by subsequent processing, e.g. by the strip process. Thus, significant loads can occur in insufficiently ventilated rooms, because vinyl acetate slowly and continuously separates from the floor coverings, which usually contain EVA polymers.

EVA has relatively poor thermal stability, which means that EVA tends to separate acetic acid at higher temperatures. Significant separation of acetic acid begins for EVA already above ca. 180°C. This is how problems arise, if other polymers need to be added, such as highly soluble isotactic polypropylenes, in order to improve the mechanical properties (abrasion resistance, strength), because then, at the necessary higher processing temperatures, the separation of acetic acid just begins. This separation of acetic acid negatively affects the properties of EVA, and thus the properties of floor coverings containing EVA, because double bonds are formed in the polymer chains, which can corrode and lead to the degradation of the polymer.

As an alternative to EVA copolymers, low density ethylene copolymers (density range around 0.915-0.935 g/cm3), such as ethylene and butene or octene copolymers -(1), are especially suitable. These low-density ethylene copolymers allow, like EVA copolymers, extraordinarily high filling with ordinary fillers in combination with adjustable flexibility and strength. Nevertheless, such low-density ethylene copolymers show pronounced olefinic properties; they are, for example, very "non-polar". Among other things, these olefinic properties have a negative effect on the adhesiveness of the multi-layer plastic tape, which contains such ethylene copolymers. In addition, it is problematic to coat such plastic tapes with a final coating or varnish, as is usual for floor coverings, in order to improve their behavior with regard to against smearing and dirt as well as resistance to wear, since the final coating or varnish does not adhere sufficiently to the plastic tape.

Therefore, the task of the present invention is to produce multi-layered plastic strips or sheets, preferably with a transparent cover layer, which do not contain PVC or EVA, or any softener. These plastic strips should furthermore have the excellent properties of known multi-layered plastic strips or sheets, without having the previously mentioned disadvantages.

The next task is to find a process for the production of these multi-layered plastic strips or plates.

These tasks will be solved by the plastic strips or plates specified in the patent claims and the process for their production.

The plastic strips or plates according to this invention consist of a covering layer and at least one following layer, wherein at least one of the layers contains at least one ethylene-alkylacrylate copolymer. It would be good if the cover layer was transparent and had one component of ethylene-alkylacrylate-copolymer.

It has been found that the plastic strips or sheets according to this invention, which do not contain PVC and EVA or plasticizer, have excellent flexibility and wear resistance. Their advantage is that they can be processed at higher temperatures, for example above 180oC, without compromising the properties of the polymer. This is an advantage, because in this way the mechanical properties of plastic strips, such as wear resistance, can be optimized, and high-melting polymers can be added, such as isotactic polypropylene types, without separating acetic acid, as is the case with the application of EVA -copolymer. The next advantage of the multi-layer plastic tape according to this invention is their low water absorption, which has a favorable effect on the stability of the mass, and thus on the properties of use, because higher water absorption leads to the swelling of the plastic tapes, as a result of which bubbles and cracks can appear in the glued joints. They compromise the adhesion strength and are surfaces for dust collection.

Finally, it was found that the multi-layer plastic strips according to this invention, if used as floor coverings, can be excellently maintained by means of dispersions rich in polymers, which are found in floor care products. This means that maintenance agents in the desired layer thickness adhere very well to the plastic strips and protect the floor covering for a longer period of time. This is achieved by increasing the polarity of the plastic surfaces of strips and plates, and by the presence of polar groups in the ethylene-alkylacrylate copolymers used according to this invention.

The plastic strips according to this invention can be obtained with a factory-applied final coating that also adheres very well. Floor coverings made of plastic materials are often coated with varnish even on the side that is used, in order to achieve the best possible properties.

The plastic strips according to this invention are also suitable for this, since such varnish adheres perfectly even without prior processing of the plastic strips. A suitable varnish for this purpose can be a two-component varnish, which does not contain solvents. First of all, this varnish must not contain solvents, and it hardens with actinic radiation (eg UV light). In any case, it would be good if there is a low content of ethylene-alkylacrylate-copolymer in the covering layer, to remove the corona from the surface of the plastic strip before applying the final coating or varnish.

It is recommended to process the back side of the cover layer, i.e. the upper side of the intermediate layer that is under the cover layer by removing the corona, if a pattern is to be printed on the mentioned sides of the layers.

U ostalim slojevima polimerno vezno sredstvo sadrži 20-80 tež.-%, povoljno 40-70 tež.-% i naročito povoljno 60-70 tež.-% najmanje jednog etilen-alkilakrilat-kopolimera, u odnosu na težinu polimernog veznog sredstva. The ethylene-alkylacrylate copolymers used according to the invention can be an integral part of each of the layers of multi-layer plastic strips or plates. In case it is a transparent covering layer, the content can be in the range of about 5-70 wt.-%, considering the weight of the covering layer, preferably 10-50 wt.-% and best 20-30 wt.-% . In the other layers, the polymer binder contains 20-80 wt.-%, preferably 40-70 wt.-% and particularly preferably 60-70 wt.-% of at least one ethylene-alkylacrylate copolymer, relative to the weight of the polymer binder.

The share of alkyl acrylate in ethylene-alkyl acrylate copolymers is about 4-30 wt.-%, preferably 10-15 wt.-%. The content of alkyl acrylate depends on the desired properties of the layer. The higher the alkyl acrylate content in the ethylene-alkyl acrylate copolymer, the softer and more flexible the copolymer is.

Drugi slojevi osim prozirnog pokrivnog sloja plastičnih traka ili ploča prema izumu sadrži 20-60 tež.-%, povoljno je 30-50 tež.-%, a naročito povoljno 35-45 tež.-% polimernog veznog sredstva. Other layers besides the transparent cover layer of plastic strips or plates according to the invention contain 20-60 wt.-%, preferably 30-50 wt.-%, and especially preferably 35-45 wt.-% of polymer binder.

In the case of plastic strips or plates according to the invention, the alkyl acrylate in the ethylene-alkyl acrylate copolymer is preferably methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate or any mixture of these polymers, and ethyl acrylate is especially preferred, because it has a less intense smell than, for example, butyl acrylate. Ethylene-alkylacrylate-copolymer is thus preferably a copolymer, which is obtained by copolymerizing ethylene with alkylacrylate, selected from methylacrylate, ethylacrylate, butylacrylate or any mixture thereof. These copolymers can be produced in an already known way, preferably by high-pressure polymerization from the gas phase.

The ethylene-alkylacrylate copolymers used according to the invention can be both random copolymers and block copolymers, whereby random copolymers are preferred.

As we have already mentioned before, the presence of at least one ethylene-alkylacrylate-copolymer of the transparent cover layer affects the excellent compatibility and adhesion of the multi-layer plastic tapes according to the invention with dispersions with many polymers, such as are found, for example, in floor care products, as well as with topcoats and varnishes. In addition, resistance to wear and tear is significantly improved. The presence of one or more ethylene-alkylacrylate copolymers in the cover layer does not significantly compromise the transparency of that layer, so that any pattern can be printed on the underside of the cover layer or on the top of the intermediate layer, which is located below, without any problems, and that pattern looks impeccable. This is a big advantage of multi-layer plastic tapes with a transparent cover layer compared to homogeneous plastic tapes.

In addition to ethylene-alkylacrylate copolymers, other polymers can also be used to optimize the performance properties of plastic strips in the covering layer. Crystalline, isotactic polypropylene-types or polypropylene copolymers can be added to control the curing properties. Furthermore, the polymer or polymer mixture of the covering layer can be modified to optimize the properties, such as hardness, indentation resistance, wear resistance, lubrication resistance (pollution), etc., by adding, for example, ethylene- and propylene-homo- and copolymers, randomly copolymers of ethylene and propylene, ethylene-propylene-rubber (EPM), ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM), styrene-isoprene-stirol (SIS) and/or styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) block polymers, as well as copolymer of ethylene with at least one alkene with up to 10 carbon atoms, as octene. To increase the viscosity, it is recommended to add high-molecular and/or ultra-high molecular polyethylene of high density (PE-HMW or PE-UHMW).

If necessary, common auxiliaries can be added to the cover layer, such as antioxidants, antistatics, lubricants (gliding) and processing aids. Antioxidants and antistatic agents are recommended, especially in the transparent cover layer, in order to protect the plastic strips from degradation due to oxidation on the one hand, and on the other hand, to prevent static loads, which are unpleasant during the production of plastic strips, and during the later use of plastic strips. tape negatively affect their pollution.

Furthermore, pigments and coloring agents can be added to the cover layer, in order to obtain a basic structure or a basic color tone before printing.

Subsequent printing of the cover layer, i.e. printing on the layer below, can be done in the usual way, for example using semi-autotype gravure printing with engraved cylinders, in which case the surface needs to be pre-treated by removing the corona.

For all layers, except for the transparent cover layer, of the multi-layer plastic tapes according to this invention, all polymers that can be used in the transparent cover layer, as well as homo- or copolymers of ethylenically unsaturated compounds or, if desired, a mixture thereof, are considered as polymers. These other layers (interlayer, lower layers) can furthermore be ordinary fillers such as chalk, kaolin, talc, wood flour, flint flour, dolomite, flint, shale and shale flour or the desired mixture of these, with the proportion of filler reduced to the layer in question is 40-80 wt.-%, 50-70 wt.-% is favorable, and 60-65 wt.-% is especially favorable.

Otherwise, auxiliaries, such as pigments and dyes, can be added to the other layers, as described for the cover layer. Because there is freedom with regard to color in the case of the intermediate layers and each, if necessary, existing next layer (bottom layer), material for recycling can be added to these layers, and especially to the bottom layers. This can be waste from production, the so-called. "new mass" wastes, such as tape edge wastes or transport wastes, or it can be material obtained during the recycling of plastic wastes. The additional amount of recyclate is adjusted according to the type of material and only so much recyclate can be added to meet the required properties of the material of the plastic strips.

If necessary, the plastic strips or panels according to this invention can be equipped with fleece or fabric for reinforcement (reinforcement), which can for example be placed between the intermediate layer and the next lower layer to give the plastic strip greater strength and dimensional stability.

The plastic strips according to this invention can be, especially if they are used as a floor covering, equipped on the underside with a heat- and/or sound-insulating layer consisting, for example, of foam plastic, fleece of sufficient thickness, textile fabric, cork or a mixture of cork.

Plastic strips or plates according to this invention are produced in such a way that individual layers (foils) are made separately and finally welded to each other in an already known manner.

Višeslojne trake prema ovom izumu su između ostalog podvrgnute slijedećim testovima: For the production of individual foils, polymer binding agents and, if necessary, auxiliary agents, fillers, recyclate, etc. are mixed and plasticized using an aggregate, such as an internal mixing device, a twin-shaft extruder, a planetary extruder with rollers or a rolling mill. Then, the plasticized mass is processed with suitable machines, such as calenders or double-belt presses, if necessary, together with fleece or reinforced fabric into a layer of the desired thickness. After that, the corresponding layers can be printed. The connection of individual foils by welding is then done, for example, using "Auma" or a two-lane press with a cooling zone, whereby the latter is recommended due to the reduction of sticking problems on the machine. At the same time or subsequently, if desired, a thermal and/or sound insulation layer can be placed on the underside of the plastic strip. Multi-layer tapes according to this invention are subjected to the following tests, among others:

Rolling resistance in the test with a ball roller (Test regulation for elastic linings according to DLW AG-internal factory standard):

This test serves (taking into account DIN 16 952 T 1-5, DIN 16 851, DIN 18 173) to determine the movement and rolling behavior of the bonded coverings similar to the requirements for a wheelchair (wheelchair).

The test is carried out using the "Stuttgart" wear test device according to DIN 51 963, which is modified in such a way that the load weight is 34 kg, the balls have a diameter of 20 mm, it has a cooling fan, and a roller element without oscillation is used . The test sample (190x190 mm) with the thickness of the finished plastic strip or plate is glued to the aluminum plate using double-sided adhesive tape. Before testing, the test specimen is stored on an air-conditioned stand in normal climate (DIN 50 014-23/50-2) for at least 24 hours. When performing the test, the test specimen is fixed on the rotating plate (plate) of the wear testing device, and the counter is set to 1000 double roller steps. The procedure is carried out with cooling (cooling fan). The number of roller steps achieved until the formation of a bubble is taken as a criterion for evaluation. The minimum requirement for the quality "suitable for a rolling chair" is that at least 100 double steps can be performed until a blister is formed.

Indentation behavior in the short-term pressure test of the marking device (test regulation for elastic coverings according to DLW AG-internal standard):

Receptura s reciklatom: Recipe with recyclate:

Instead of the above-mentioned recipe with a new mass, it is also possible to use ground waste from the edge strips of the finished lining or even foreign recyclate in an amount of up to 50%, reduced to the total amount of the layer. The components of the recipe are mixed in a vortex mixer (Henschel) and plasticized for approx. 4 min. in a GK5 kneader from Werner&Pfleiderer (Mass temperature 180oC to 190oC). The mass is fed on the Schwabenthan rolling mill directly (rolling temperature 150oC) to a 4-roller calender (Berstorff company) and produces foil with a thickness of 0.5 mm.

The intermediate layer produced as described above is printed on a Dornbusch 4-color intaglio printing machine, from roll to roll, with intermediate drying and final drying. The printing ink from the company K+E, Stuttgart in special colors was used. The binding agent adjusted to the substrate. The corona was removed from the printing substrate before the printing process. (Speed approx. 40 m/min.).

Temperatura sušenja: Drying temperature:

Kanal 1 40oC Channel 1 40oC

Kanal 2 40oC Channel 2 40oC

Kanal 3 40oC Channel 3 40oC

Zadnji kanal 60oC Rear channel 60oC

Suhi sloj tiskarske boje iznosi ca. 15 do 20 g/m2 kod tiskanja kompletne površine po tlačnom cilindru. The dry layer of printing ink is approx. 15 to 20 g/m2 when printing the entire surface per pressure cylinder.

Povezivanje pojedinačnih folija Connection of individual foils

Pojedinačne folije se zavaruju u cjelinu slijedeće strukture: Individual foils are welded into a whole of the following structure:

Pokrivni sloj (prozirni sloj) 0,4 mm Cover layer (transparent layer) 0.4 mm

Međusloj s vunom, otiskan 0,3 mm Intermediate layer with wool, printed 0.3 mm

Donji sloj trostruki po 0,5 mm Bottom layer triple 0.5 mm

2,2 mm ± 0,1 mm 2.2 mm ± 0.1 mm

In order to achieve this, a rubber band (Berstorff company) is fed to the individual layers (foils) on the Mehler Rayon device, which is used to weld the foils into a connected unit at a drum temperature of 100oC. The bottom layer and the intermediate layer are preheated using an infrared (IR) radiation device to a surface temperature of 180oC. Belt speed 2m/min, belt pressure 200 bar = 4 bar partial pressure. Finally, in the same production phase, the lining is coated using a roller application device with a reciprocating motion with 100% UV varnish that can form a mesh structure (type LM 720, company Lott, Bielefeld) in an amount of 15 to 20 g/m2. The mesh structure is created in a later connected UV channel, which is equipped with 4 devices for UV radiation with a power of 120 Watt/cm, which can be regulated between 50 and 100%. The first radiation device could be adjusted in height to regulate the brightness.
