Abstract

The introduction of polar groups into engineering thermoplastics provides the possibility of creating compatible mixtures with polybenzimidazole. These mixtures can be formed into thin films, which can be impregnated with acid. The impregnated membranes can be used in applications necessitating the use of polymeric electrolytes. Their temperature range of application extends from ambient temperatures up to 220 degrees C. The impregnated membranes of such mixtures have better mechanical properties compared with membranes of pure polybenimidazole, they are easier to process mechanically, cost less, and at the same time their ionic conductivity has been found satisfactorily high. The best results have been obtained with mixtures containing between 20 and 50 per cent of PBI, in the presence of polar groups in the thermoplastics in proportions between 10 and 40 per cent and an acid impregnation level between 5 and 10.
