Abstract

A method for the separation of mixed post-consumer plastics including industrial applications (either physically commingled or in a multilayer structure) from the overall waste stream as well as from each other. The method includes a density/solubility based process for the separation and recycling of plastics. It consists of: density classification by water, selective dissolution (dissolution of one polymer at a time from a plastics mixture at a specific temperature in a specific solvent), reprecipitation by adding a fluid acting as non-solvent or by cooling) for the reclamation of the plastic dissolved and total recovery of the solvents used. By this method can be effectively separated : plastics from their mixtures, single plastic waste from its insoluble and soluble contaminants or any defective matter, plastis from their multilayer structures and plastic matrices from their reinforcing agents. The polymer grades being recycled by this method are converted, free of any soluble or insoluble additives or other polymers, into a form acceptable to fabrication equipment (powder or small grains), and can be used in many different applications, competing the virgin material. These additives (including the reinforcing agents) are also reclaimed and can be used even to their primary applications.
