In a semi-automatic device for nailing protecting slats and binding strips on to a drum loaded with cable, the drum is placed on two supports at least one being adjustable and is turned about its axis intermittently by a wheel with a pneumatic tyre resting on one side of the drum and connected to an electric motor to present the slats to automatic nailing means, the electric motor being started by the introduction of a slat and the nailing means being operated by the stopping of the electric motor. The drum 1 is hoisted on to supports 4, the axle 6 being supported at each end on a slide box 7 by means of rollers 8. The drum is rotated by a wheel 15 connected to an electric motor 14 and on the other side of the drum is a wheel 16 and a stop 17 for preventing the slats from projecting laterally of the drum. The rollers 8 are mounted in a member 23 slidable on needle bearings 24. This arrangement permits the drum to move axially due to axial irregularities in its flanges so as to maintain the flanges aligned with the nailers at the nailing position. The slats 2 are inserted in position either manually or automatically. A switch with a slat contacting arm 21 is mounted on a feeler 20 spring loaded to compensate for any variations in diameter of the drum flange. The switch initiates operation of the nailers 10 and the motor 14. The first slat is positioned by removable means (not described) and secured. When a second slat 2<SP>1</SP> is inserted, it operates the arm 21 to close the switch 19 and thus rotate the drum a distance equal to the width of a slat. The switch is opened when the lever 21 reaches the end of the slat and then initiates operation of the nailers 10 which fix the slat to the flanges and also secure a binding strip 12 to the slat. The binding strips are fed from reels 13.
