Abstract

999,071. Sprinkler system alarm valve. Z. J. SOSINSKI, J. J. G. C. HOPPENBROUWERS, J. SWEEP, and J. E. M. VAN IERSEL, [trading as SAVAL APPARATENFABRIEK C.V.]. Jan. 25, 1963 [Feb. 13, 1962], No. 3161/63. Heading A5A. A valve for operating the alarm system of a sprinkler system and usable when the system is of either the " wet " or " dry " type comprises a valve body resting on a seat in the pipe leading to the sprinklers and which is raised from its seating when liquid flows towards one or more sprinklers to allow entry of extinguishing liquid into the system and to an alarm device operated thereby and is characterized by having a third opening which is shut off by the valve in its closed position and which is connected, via an adjustable cock either with the alarm device or with the liquid contents of the system. The valve depicted in Fig. 1 (not shown) is used in conjunction with systems shown schematically in Figs. 2 and 3 which show the arrangement for " dry " and " wet " systems respectively. Referring to Fig. 2, the water supply pipe 2 with main valve 14 connects with the valve and is contained by the rubber diaphragm 8 which also seals off chambers 9 and 10 which are connected via pipes 15, 16 and 17 and 16, 17, 18 and cock 19 respectively to the alarm device. The outlet 3 leads to the sprinklers and at 20 there is a wide discharge pipe with valve 21. At 26, a pipe from the water-supply 2 leads to the alarm device and, via an adjustable cock 27 and non-return valve 28, to the chamber 10. In this arrangement, when a sprinkler operates, the air pressure above the diaphragm drops and the valve opens to allow water to pass to the sprinklers and also via the chambers 9 and 10 and associated pipes to the alarm. For testing, cock 31 is turned so that water reaches the alarm via pipes 26 and 30. The arrangement in Fig. 3 differs in that cock 19 and valve 27 are in different positions so that chamber 10 connects with the space above the diaphragm via pipe 23 and not with the alarm and water may pass into chamber 10 via cock 27 and non-return valve 28 when a pressure drop above the diaphragm allows. In this case, testing may be done not only by turning cock 31 but also by opening cock 25 to cause a pressure drop above the diaphragm.
