Abstract
<PICT:0998575/C6-C7/1> <PICT:0998575/C6-C7/2> In an ultrasonic acid pickling process the ultrasonic waves are generated with a transducer having a guard plate of an acid proof and ultrasonic transmissible material, a metal plate electrode embedded in the guard plate and an ultrasonic vibrating element attached to the metal plate. The transducer and object to be descaled are moved relatively to each other during the process and as shown in Fig. 1 a metal band or wire 6 is moved continuously through a pickling bath 8 containing transducer sets 3 and 4 connected in parallel to oscillator 5. Stainless steel may be pickled in an aqueous solution of 25% HCl and 3% HNO3 at 30 DEG C. under radiation of ultrasonic waves of 40 kc. Tubes may also be pickled, Figs. 2-7 (not shown) in baths containing several transducers arranged in different positions either the tubes being rotated or the transducers being moved. As shown in Fig. 8, the transducer comprises a tubular member 20 with a chamber 21 the front part of which is a guard plate in which is embedded a metal electrode 23 to which is connected a vibrating element 22 of barium titanate or quartz. The guard plate may also be enclosed in a water jacket, Fig. 11 (not shown).
