Abstract

998,363. Ventilators. AMERICAN AIR FILTER CO. Inc. Aug. 23, 1962 [Aug. 31, 1961], No. 32472/62. Heading F4V. A unit ventilator includes two simultaneously and oppositely rotatable dampers 10A and 10B controlling the admission of outdoor air to the unit, and a damper 16 controlling the admission of recirculated air, the dampers 10A and 16 being connected by a linkage, including lost motion connections, so that within limits determined by the setting of the damper 10A, the damper 16 is self-positioning. A crank 40 fixed to the shaft 12A of damper 10A has a pin 46 engaging a slot 48 in a link 42 which in turn has a pin 50 engaging a slot 52 in a crank 44 fixed to the shaft 18 of damper 16. The dimensions of the cranks 40 and 44, link 42 and slots 48 and 52 are such that when dampers 10A and 10B are closed against seats 21, damper 16 is held fully open (Fig. 1) and when dampers 10A and 10B are fully open, damper 16 is held closed against its seat 21 (Fig. 3). In intermediate positions of the dampers 10A and 10B, the damper 16, which has a counterweight 20, positions itself according to the outdoor air draught. The dampers 10A and 10B are operated by a mechanism (not shown) through a link 38. The ventilator is disposed against a ceiling 6 and a wall 8 and communicates with a source of outdoor air through an opening 2 in the wall and with the room through recirculation inlet 4. The ventilator comprises a central compartment through which air flows and houses the dampers, a filter 22 and heat exchange means and fans (not shown), and one or more end compartments housing the damper operating mechanism, a fan motor and control elements. The end compartments are separated from the central compartment by partitions 14 in which the shafts 12A, 12B and 24 are journalled.
