Abstract

998,185. Vaccination appliances. H. KRAVITZ, and N. LETTVIN. July 19, 1961 [Aug. 1, 1960; Aug. 8, 1960], No. 26169/61. Heading A5R. A device for applying a substance, such as vaccine, by puncturing the skin, comprises a number of spaced pointed members mounted on a rigid base, the rear side of which is of greater area than the area covered by the pointed members and the members are spaced not more than 1À5 mm. from each other, so as to retain a viscous liquid. In one form, nine pyramidal spikes 22 on a square raised portion 20 are mounted on a base 18 of such shape that the border portion 19 is approximately as wide as the side of the portion 20. Such a device may be mounted on a strip of adhesive tape for attachment to the practitioner's thumb. Alternatively, the base may be extended to a rectangular form and held on the thumb by a rubber band or the base may be further extended and curved round to form a split ring for fitting on the thumb.
