Abstract
998,140. Centrifugal strainer separators. AJEM LABORATORIES Inc. March 6, 1962 [March 9, 1961], No. 8585/62. Heading BID. Solids in slurry introduced at 12, Fig. 1, are prevented from adhering to the outside of a centrifugal drum screen 14, and are repelled therefrom by the speed of its rotation. Filtrate is discharged through a pipe 30 communicating with the drum interior, while concentrated solids are discharged at 34. In Fig. 4A the drive shaft 16b of the drum screen 14b is surrounded by a hollow shaft to which are secured the vanes of a two-stage centrifugal pump 35b for withdrawing the filtrate. The shafts may be rotated at different speeds. In Fig. 8 (not shown), filtrate is withdrawn by a centrifugal pump, and the liquid flow drives the drum screen by reaction against a set of vanes mounted in the top of the drum. The surface of the drum screen may take various forms. To improve its repulsion characteristics, the screen may be formed wtih vertical corrugations; or it may have the shape, in plan section, of a ratchet wheel ; or it may be surrounded by an array of nearly-tangential inclined vanes secured between the upper and lower end-plates ; or it may have vanes secured just inside its periphery but spaced therefrom, these serving also to improve the filtrate flow. When the drum screen is frusto-conical it may be located either way up. The rate of flow may be increased by providing vertical rods extending between the drum end plates near the drum axis. The drum may be positioned horizontally, and the liquid flow path from the slurry inlet to the sludge outlet may be tangential to the drum ; the direction of flow may be in the same sense as the direction of rotation of the drum to assist solids repulsion. There may be inclined radial vanes across the inner (withdrawal) end of the drum, when it is positively driven, to form a pump, in series with the main pump provided in the filtrate discharge conduit. Specifications 754,585 and 804,997 are referred to.
