Abstract

998,132. Laminates. C. G. MUNTERS. Jan. 5, 1962 [Jan. 9, 1961], No. 483/62. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B1 and F4] Heat or moisture transfer components, comprising adjacent thin sheets of asbestos secured together and shaped, for example by corrugation of at least alternate sheets, so as to form passages between them, are treated (a) to remove or render innocuous organic materials such as starch and/or cellulosic fibres which are employed to bond the fibres of the sheets together and which are liable to become ignited in use and cause disintegration of the sheets, e.g. by loss of water of crystallization from the fibres, and (b) by impregnation with inorganic material to replace the material removed. Treatment (a) consists of burning of the organic constituents under controlled non- oxidizing conditions which prevent too high a rise of temperature. As shown in Fig. 2, the component comprises thin alternately corrugated asbestos sheets 40, 42 the fibres of which are bound with starch and the inclusion of cellulose fibres. The corrugated sheets provide channels 26 about 1-3 mm. in depth and are secured to the plane sheets by inorganic adhesive such as sodium silicate. The sheets are impregnated (treatment (b)) to increase their strength, before heat treatment, with calcium silicate (formed by precipitation between calcium chloride and sodium silicate), or, when used for drying or moisture transfer, may be impregnated after heat treatment with a hygroscopic salt such as lithium chloride. The laminated components may be in the form of a rotor as described in Specification 770,201. The heat treatment may be carried out in apparatus, Fig. 1, comprising an outer insulated chamber 10 containing an inner chamber 20 having a grid 30 for uniform distribution of air and a second grid 24 supporting the component 26 to be treated, the periphery of the grid being blocked off by a screen 28. Hot air is circulated through the component by a fan 34 and the temperature and combustion controlled by the admission of air through a butterfly valvecontrolled inlet 14 and the release of gases through a similar outlet 12. The invention is applicable in the manufacture of cooling towers.
