Abstract

998,090. Colour projection systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. June 29,1961 [Aug.15, 1960], No. 23568/61. Addition to 944,247. Heading G2J. In a system in which coloured images are to be projected by a lens 47 on to a screen 43,point by point information relating to said coloured images is contained in a tape 21 in the form of orthogonally arranged deformations, some of which are, for example, for diffracting green light in the vertical direction and the others being, for example, for diffracting red and blue light in the horizontal direction. The construction of such a tape is described in the parent Specification. A source of light is provided, for example, by an arc 44 with reflector 45. A mask 50 having rectangular transparent area or openings 51 and a filter mask 52 having corresponding opaque areas 55 are so arranged that light which has traversed the openings 51 and is undeviated by the tape 21 is focused by a lens 46 on the opaque areas 55. In the areas of tape 21 where deformations for deviating green light occur green light from source 44 is diffracted vertically and passes through one of the green filter strips 53 in the mask 52 to be projected by the lens 47 on to the screen 43. Light other than green is blocked by strips 55 or 53. In the areas of tape 21 where deformations for deviating blue light occur, blue light from source 44 is diffracted horizontally and passes through the first of the magenta filter strips 54 provided between the opaque strips 55 to be projected by the lens 47 on to the screen 43. Red light is similarly diffracted horizontally by its corresponding deformations to pass through the second of the magenta strips counting from the opaque strip on which the undeviated light would have fallen. Other colours of light and red light diffracted by the blue-light-diffracting deformations and vice-versa are blocked by the opaque strips 55 or the magenta filter strips 54. Masks 51 and 52 may be interchanged. Specification 954, 644 also is referred to.
