Abstract
997,224. Adjusting vehicle body height. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Nov. 14, 1961 [Dec. 28, 1960], No. 40736/61. Heading B7D. In a vehicle suspension system having each road wheel 1 mounted on a pivoted arm 2 connected to the piston 4 of a pneumatic spring 5 communicating with a pressure reservoir 6 through an electromagnetic valve 8 and a compressor 10, a level corrector 11 controls the operation of the valve 8 and compressor 10 by comparing the pressure in the spring 5 and the reservoir 6 with the pressure in a gas-filled elastic enclosure. A bellows 12 communicating with the spring 5 and a concentric bellows communicating with the reservoir 6 are closed by a plate 16 carrying a knife edge 17 engaging a groove 19 in a plate 20 closing a third bellows 21 filled with gas at a predetermined initial pressure. A pin 23 on the plate 20 engages forks 24 on a pivoted member 25 carrying electrical contacts 28, 29 which co-operate with contacts 30, 31 on an adjustable frame 32. Expansion of the bellows 12 due to increased vehicle loading closes the contacts 28, 30 to open the valve 8 whereupon gas flows from the reservoir 6 to the springs 5 until falling pressure in the bellows 14 communicating with the reservoir restores the member 25 to its neutral position. Contraction of the bellows 12 due to reduced loading closes the contacts 29, 31 to energize the compressor 10 and return gas to the reservoir until the contacts are opened by increasing pressure in the bellows 14. When increased temperature results in increased pressure in the reservoir 6 and in the bellows 21 the greater area of the latter compared with the bellows 14 results in closure of the contacts 29, 31 to return gas to the reservoir 6. The bellows 12 may be connected to a deformable chamber within the spring 5 so that a different fluid may be used. Flat or tubular diaphragms may be used instead of bellows. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the concentric bellows connected to the spring and reservoir are enclosed in a casing containing gas at a predetermined pressure. The plate closing both bellows co-operates with a fixed contact at one end of the casing, and a rod secured to the plate co-operates with a contact at the other.
