Abstract

A method of manufacturing a sintered compacted body containing at least 90% by weight of one of the compounds or a mixture of two or more of the compounds in the group consisting of the silicides, carbides and borides of the transition elements, e.g. titanium, zirconium, tantalum and niobium, in Group IV, V and VI of the Peroidic System comprises compacting and sintering a pulverulent mass at least part of which consists of the pulverulent product produced by breaking up and subsequently pulverizing a sintered compacted metal body.ALSO:A method of breaking up a sintered compacted metal body comprises immersing the body at an elevated temperature in a bed of particles fluidized by a cooling liquid. The body may then be subjected to impact. The cycle of thermally shocking the body by immersion in the bed followed by impact may be repeated a number of times. The body may contain at least 90% by weight of one of the compounds or a mixture of two or more of the compounds in the group consisting of the silicides, carbides and borides of the transition elements, e.g. titanium, zirconium, tantalum and niobium, in Group IV, V and VI of the Periodic System. The broken-up product is then pulverized. Specification 986,756 is referred to.
