Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A valve diaphragm structure 46 adapted for flexing in a valve assembly between an open position (shown in solid outline in Fig. 1) and a closed position (shown in broken outline) in which it is tightly compressed against a valve seat comprises a flexible elastomeric body member 48 and a polytetrafluoroethylene liner 50 chemically bonded thereto at 52, the liner having a tensile strength and breaking elongation at least equal to that of the body member. Finely divided polytetrafluoroethylene resin is extruded through a screw extruder to form a film which is heated and continuously coined in an oven. Several films are laid in plies one on top of another with their axes of orientation of physical properties at uniform angles relative to one another and fused together to form a single sheet which is then cut to the required size and compressed and heated in a mould to form a liner member. The individual films may be fused together while simultaneously forming the member. The liner member is then immersed in liquid ammoniasodium to give it an active surface and assembled in a mould with the preformed body member which is coated with adhesive 54. Heat and pressure are applied whereby the body member is vulcanized and the liner chemically bonded thereto. The body member may include a reinforcing member 56 of rayon or nylon fabric.
