996,773. Turbine and compressor stators. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 8, 1963 [Oct. 19, 1962], No. 39705/62. Heading F1T. An interstage turbine or axial flow compressor diaphragm comprises a circumferentially extending row of stator blades 5 of aerofoil cross section secured between a diaphragm centre 1, formed with a central aperture 3 to accommodate the rotor shaft, and an outer ring 7 or outer ring segments secured to the outer ends of the blades 5 and locating the blade tips against displacement relative to one another, the radially inner end 5A of each blade fitting within an individual radially extending blind ended socket 9 in the diaphragm centre 1 which is profiled to conform substantially with the profile of this end part and is of sufficient depth to provide a mechanical joint between the blade and the diaphragm centre sufficiently strong to withstand the forces axially and circumferentially of the rotor which are exerted on the blade in use, means being provided inhibiting radial movements of the blades relative to the diaphragm centre. The diaphragm is formed in semi-circular halves and the sockets 9 are formed in rim 3A by spark or electrolytic machining. The thin edge of the inner end 5A of each blade 5 is cut away and the blades may be retained radially by brazing or welding to the rim of sockets 9 or by pins or rivets, Fig. 3 (not shown). Outer ring 7 may be attached to the blades in the same manner as used at the inner ends 5A. Blades 5 consist of lengths of rolled bar.
