Abstract

A pigment for enamels consists essentially of a calcination product of oxide of zirconium, silicon and iron, in which at least 40% of the oxides are associated together in the form of an iron-containing zircon crystal lattice and the iron content, expressed as Fe2O3, is from 10 to 25% by weight. The proportions may be ZrO2 30-75; SiO2 15-55; Fe2O3 10-25 in percentage by weight. The production is as in the parent Specification giving in addition alkali metal ions 0.25-8; fluoride ions 0.25-12 and chloride and/or bromide ions 0.25-8. Two examples are disclosed yielding a brown-red pigment to give a coral-pink glaze.
