In a synchronous generator 2 having automatic regulation of its excitation without dynamo-electric source and comprising power current transformers 4 connected in its stator output circuit and to its exciting winding 1, via a three-phase bridge circuit of rectifiers 3, together with a three-phase voltage transformer 8 connected to the generator output circuit, it is stated that the forcing ability of the excitation, under e.g. mains short-circuit conditions, is increased by the provision of controllable, e.g. ion rectifiers 7, connected in an antiparallel manner in series with each phase of the voltage transformer 8 and to the bridge circuit rectifiers 3. The latter may be watercooled semi-conductors, and saturable reactors 11 may be provided to extend the excitation range.
