Abstract

1,060,608. Synchronous generators. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. Dec. 2, 1963 [Nov. 30, 1962], No. 47508/63. Heading H2A. In a self-regulating A.C. synchronous generator 1 for maintaining a constant voltage and which is excited via rectifiers 6 by a separately arranged current compounded frequency converter 2 whose rotor 7 together with the rectifiers 6 are mounted on the generator shaft and whose stator 8 has two 3-phase mutually electrically displaced windings, one winding 8a is a voltage no-load excitation winding supplied through reactor coils 10 separate from the generator stator windings whilst the other 8b is a current winding providing load-responsive additional excitation whereby the generator output voltage is independent of load and P.F. The converter rotor 7 rotates in the opposite direction to the field of its stator 8 so that the generator excitation voltage is of higher frequency than the generator output voltage. To ensure self-excitation the generator rotor 3 may be of highly coercive material, e.g. sheet steel, and one of its phases 4 is short-circuited for damping purposes. The reactors 10 may be adjustable for test purposes, and the rotor 7 may be axially displaceable to vary the excitation setting. In another embodiment suitable for operating generators in parallel the converter current winding 8b is supplied instead from adjustable tappings on current transformers connected to the stator winding 5.
