Abstract

995,498. Clutch control. FABBRIKA ITALIANA MAGNETI MARELLI S.p.A. March 30, 1962 [April 1, 1961], No. 12263/62. Heading F2L. An electro-pneumatic clutch control for a motor vehicle comprises an electrically operated valve A which on closure of a gear shaft lever switch 27 supplies pressure air from a source 9 through a check valve 11 to a clutch disengaging servomotor 6 and to a servomotor 13 which reduces throttle opening, and further electrically operated valves B, C which when the clutch is disengaged connect the pressure air source 9 to the servomotor 6 through an engine speed responsive valve D so that on establishment of a gear ratio and consequential de-energization the valve A which vents the servo 13, the servo 6 is maintained energized through the valve D until the engine speed attains a predetermined value whereupon the valve D vents at 24<SP>1</SP> the servo 6 for clutch engagement. The valve D has inlet and outlet chambers 20, 22 respectively connected through lines 8, 18, 19 and valve B to the pressure source 9 and through lines 21, 23, 10 and valve C to the clutch servo 6. When the engine speed is below the predetermined speed there is, as shown, free communication between the chambers 20, 22 and the exhaust port 24<SP>1</SP> is blocked. When the engine speed attains the predetermined speed a governor 7 moves the valve spool 24 left to cut communication between the chambers 20, 22 and open the exhaust port 24<SP>1</SP>. Initial clutch engagement tends to reduce the engine speed and thus close the exhaust port 24<SP>1</SP> whereupon the rate of clutch engagement is also reduced. A valve E energized on closure of a switch 29 during overrun of the clutch output member supplies pressure air to a servo-motor 30 which increases throttle opening thus facilitating downshift. The valves B, C are energized on closure of a switch 28 effected when the clutch is completely disengaged. The usual ignition and manual override switches 25, 26 are provided.
