Abstract

Aqueous solutions containing polyvalent metal ions are treated by addition to said solution of an aminophosphonic acid of the formula <FORM:0995462/C1/1> or <FORM:0995462/C1/2> wherein R and R1 represent hydrogen atoms or C1-C8 alkyl radicals, R11 represents a C1-C10 alkyl, C1-C10 alkenyl, phenyl or phenylalkyl radical and R111 represents a C1-C10 alkylene radical, or water-soluble salts thereof, so as to sequester said metal ions in the form of a complex with said aminophosphonic acids or salts thereof. The process may be applied to softening water and prevention of the precipitation of water-hardening agents during cleaning processes, e.g. bottle washing.ALSO:Aminophosphonic acids of the general formula <FORM:0995462/C2/1> or <FORM:0995462/C2/2> wherein R and R1 represent hydrogen atoms or C1-C8 alkyl radicals, R11 represents a C1-C10 alkyl, C1-C10 alkenyl, phenyl or phenylalkyl radical and R111 represents a C1-C10 alkylene radical, are prepared by reacting at 0 DEG to 100 DEG C. phosphorus trihalides with organic nitriles or dinitriles, adding, after or during said reaction, organic acids or inorganic oxygen-containing acids to the reaction mixture, and reacting the product so formed with water to give the free acids or with alcohols or phenols to give the esters. It is preferred to employ about 2 mols., when preparing compounds of formula 1, or about 4 mols., when preparing compounds of formula 2, of phosphorus trihalide per mol. of nitrile. The acids or their water-soluble salts are used to sequester polyvalent metal ions from aqueous solutions thereof.ALSO:In textile cleaning processes polyvalent metal ions are requested from aqueous solution by the addition to said solution of an aminophosphonic acid of the formula <FORM:0995462/D1-D2/1> or <FORM:0995462/D1-D2/2> wherein R and R1 represents hydrogen atoms or C1-C8 alkyl radicals, R11 represents a C1-C10 alkyl, C1-C10 alkenyl, phenyl or phenylalkyl radical and R111 represents a C1-C10 alkylene radical, or water-soluble salt thereof, so as to form a complex with said metal ions. In an example rust spots are removed from fabrics by boiling in a 2% by weight solution of 1-aminoethane-1, 1-diphosphonic acid with a pH between 1.5 and 5. Reference is also made to decrusting fabrics in which alkaline earth salts have been deposited by said process.
