During adjustment of the focal length in one part of the adjustment range the spacing of two of the movable lenses is maintained constant whereas in another part of the adjustment range, the spacing between two other lenses is kept fixed. Fig. 2 shows a varifocal objective consisting of negative lens L 1a , positive lens L 1b , negative lens L 2 and positive lens L 3 . Increase of focal length to a certain value is effected by relative movement of lens L 2 and the system formed by lenses L 1a and L 1b ,which are maintained at a fixed spacing. Any further increase of focal length is obtained by relative movement of lenses L 1a and L 1b , the lens L 2 remaining at a fixed distance from the lens L 3 . In the objectives of Fig. 4, there is zero spacing between negative components L 2 a, L 2 b until a certain focal length is reached; further change of focal length is affected by altering the spacing between lenses L 2a , L 2b and maintaining fixed the spacing between lens L 2a and the positive lens L 1 which is moved together with L 2a . Lens L 3 is a fixed positive lens in this embodiment.
