Abstract

994, 675. Fluid-pressure servomotor systems. CADILLAC GAGE CO. Nov.16, 1962 [Nov.17, 1961], No. 43378/62. Heading G3P. [Also in Division G4] A servo actuator comprises linear positioning means 10 having an output member 20 the position of which is discretely variable in response to control signals applied to the means 10 and which controls a valve 12, valve 12 controlling booster means 14 having a positionable output member 24, and positional feedback means 190 from the booster 14 to valve 12 whereby the output member 24 is moved to a position depending on the position of the output member 20. The linear positioning means 10 has a cylinder containing an end cap 30, pistons 32, 34.50 and output member 20 which is fixed to piston 50. Cap 30 and piston 32.. 50 have hooked extensions such that the distance between any given two adjacent elements 30, 32. . 50 in the cylinder can vary over a fixed range, the ranges being in the ratio 1:1: 2: 2 : 4 : 4. 16: 16 going along the chain of elements 30, 32.. 50. Each chamber between adjacent elements is held in an expanded or contracted condition, i.e. with the two elements as far apart or as close as possible, by solenoid-actuated valves 18 which connect each chamber to a pressure fluid source or return. When connected to a return, the chamber contracts under the influence of a biasing pressure acting on the end piston 50 and supplied via an adjustable orifice 88. The valves 18 are arranged so that in the absence of energizing currents, alternate chambers (ratio 1: 2 : 4.. 16) are contract and the others expanded, so that the output member 20 occupies a neutral position. By energization of selected solenoids, the output member 20 can be moved in either direction from the neutral position by the required amount. The output member 20 is connected to one end of a lever 204 pivoted at 210 to the housing, the other end of lever 204 being pivoted to the mid-point of a lever 224. One end of lever 224 is connected to the control rod 22 of valve 12 and the other end to feedback means 190. The booster means 14 has a double-acting piston 182 (Fig. 4) on a piston rod 180 connected to both output member 24 and feedback means 190. The side of the piston 182 is connected to a pressure fluid source and the other to a return depending on the position of the control rod 22 of valve 12, except when rod 22 is in a mid-position when neither is connected to either. Modifications. The positioning means 10 need not operate around a neutral position, the extension ranges of successive chambers being in the ratio 1: 2 4... The combined actions of several positioning means 10, optionally modified by a manual input, could be used to control value 12.
