Abstract

An electrostatic spray-coating system comprises a high-voltage D.C. supply, a spraying device including means for forming a spray of coating material, and an ionizing electrode connected to said supply for bringing the ionizing electrode to a high-voltage D.C. potential to charge the spray particles as they leave the spraying device, wherein the connection between said supply and said ionizing electrode consists of a conductor which is separate from the means for feeding the coating material to the spraying device and which has a high distributed resistance over the length thereof. The conductor may comprise a wire of high resistivity material, such as natural or synthetic rubber having pulverulent conductive material uniformly incorporated therein; a preferred construction includes a core of the high resistivity material wound round with an insulating tape and having an outer polyethylene sheath. The construction is such that the current surge which would otherwise occur when the nozzle tip is held adjacent to or in contact with a conductive object at earth potential is damped effectively.
